This book is one of the earliest and most important works in Islamic biographical literature, documenting the lives of key figures in early Islam. Written by the historian Ibn Sa'd, Kitab al-Tabaqat al-Kabir provides detailed accounts of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), his companions, and the succeeding generations of scholars, rulers, and influential personalities.
Recognizing its historical significance, an English translation of this voluminous work was published to make it more accessible to scholars and students of Islamic history. Previously, an Urdu translation was published in 1944 by the Translation Bureau, Hyderabad Deccan, but it has since gone out of print. Additionally, the Urdu version did not include the full chains of narrators as given in the original Arabic text.
While some narrations in Tabaqat may be considered fabricated or historically unreliable, the book remains a rich source of early Islamic history. It offers an extensive compilation of biographical records that shed light on the lives, achievements, and contributions of key figures in the Islamic world. Despite some historical inconsistencies, modern readers and researchers will find a wealth of information relevant to early Islamic scholarship.
