Mishkat al-Anwar – Imam al-Ghazali

Mishkat al-Anwar, commonly translated as The Niche of Lights, is a profound work of Islamic spirituality and philosophy by the celebrated scholar Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali.

Inspired by the famous Verse of Light in the Qur’an—Surah al-Nur, verse 35—Imam al-Ghazali explores the deeper meanings of light, knowledge and spiritual perception. He explains how physical light can serve as a symbol for intellectual and divine illumination, ultimately identifying Allah as the true source of all light.

The book also examines the visible and unseen worlds, the faculties of the human soul, Qur’anic symbolism and the spiritual veils that prevent people from recognising divine truth. Through these reflections, al-Ghazali connects revelation, reason and inner spiritual experience.
